We at BGA believe that every Learner has the ability to succeed. They just need the right time, tools, and support to truly master what they are learning. Unlike traditional education models that move all students through material at the same pace, BGA’s flexible, personalised learning approach ensures that no Learner is left behind due to knowledge gaps or time constraints.
Why Mastery Matters
In many traditional classrooms, learning is tied to time rather than understanding. A unit might last two weeks, and when the test comes, the class moves on — whether or not everyone has fully grasped the material. Over time, these small gaps in understanding can build up.
Take mathematics, for example. A Learner might struggle with algebra, not because they lack ability, but because they never quite mastered earlier concepts such as multiplication or working with negative numbers. Without the opportunity to revisit and strengthen these building blocks, frustration can set in and confidence can fade. A Learner might even start to believe they are “bad at algebra” when the real issue is simply a missing foundation.
This is where mastery learning changes everything.
Mastery Learning at BGA
At BGA, progress is not tied to the calendar; it is tied to understanding. Our Learners can take as long as they need to fully grasp each concept before moving on. This ensures that they are not simply memorising information to pass a test but truly internalising knowledge that will serve them in more advanced studies.
Each Learner works with a Course Manager who supports their progress, helping them identify gaps and providing personalised guidance to strengthen those areas. If a concept needs extra attention, the Learner can slow down and practise until they are confident. On the other hand, if they have already mastered a topic, they can move ahead at their own pace without waiting for others to catch up. This flexibility means Learners can save time on subjects they grasp quickly and dedicate more focus to those that require deeper understanding.
This freedom to move at one’s own pace not only builds confidence but also leads to deeper understanding and retention, which are the cornerstones of true learning.
The Science Behind Mastery: Bloom’s 2 Sigma Problem
In the 1980s, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom conducted a landmark study. It revealed that students who received one-to-one tutoring and advanced through material only after achieving mastery performed two standard deviations better than those in traditional classroom settings.
To put it simply, these students achieved results better than 98% of their peers, all because they learned at their own pace with personal support and did not move forward until they fully understood each concept.
This finding, known as Bloom’s 2 Sigma Problem, illustrates the power of personalised and mastery-based education.
Filling the Gaps, Building the Future
By allowing Learners to progress at their own pace and focus on true mastery, BGA helps ensure that every Learner has a strong foundation for future success. Whether it is taking the time on gaps in understanding or exploring advanced material ahead of schedule, each Learner’s journey is uniquely tailored to their needs.
This approach does not just make them better students. It also helps them become lifelong Learners who are confident, curious, and capable of tackling new challenges independently.
Learning Without Limits
Mastery learning is not just a teaching method, it’s a mindset. BGA empowers Learners to take ownership of their education, supported by expert guidance and the flexibility to learn at their own pace. In doing so, we remove the pressure of “keeping up” and replace it with the confidence that comes from truly understanding.
Because when every Learner has the chance to master what they learn, there are no limits to what they can achieve.
